Hampshire Junior B Cup First Round.
Most of the Division Two clubs were involved in the Hampshire Junior B Cup and two of them AFC Berg and Somesay were handed walkovers as their opponents Baughurst Reserves and Hamble United were unable to raise a team.
Four other Basingstoke clubs are through. Sherborne Saints returned from their trip to Salisbury with a 4-2 win against Redlynch & Woodfalls United. It took them 20 seconds to take the lead. It came following a five man move and a smooth finish from Alex Izzo and then Liam Doran extended the lead in the 20th after taking a pass from Tobi Judd. Sloppy defending allowed the home team to pull a goal back by half time. nd they then equalised a minute into the second half. It was Doran with his second from the Matt Kelly cross that saw Saints in front again in the 75th and they assured their path into the second round when in the 83rd the home keeper pulled off a fine save from a shot by Matt Livingstone following a corner by Warren Hill and Izzo followed up to bury the loose ball.
Basingstoke Athletic were in good shape this week with players available and came up with a 10-1 win against visitors Ryde Sports A, including Tobie Hyde, who although not amongst the scorers, was a big influence in midfield. It was however the Islanders who scored first from a penalty, but by half time it became 3-1, goals from Matt Dean, George Byrne and Kieran Challis who eventually scored four. Lee O’Grady, normally at centre back moved up front for this game and netted a hat trick and Byrne scored his second.
Longdog Soldiers are through after winning a penalty shootout 5-4 when their team were level at 2-2 on 90 minutes. It was against Southampton League team Compton Reserves, who went into a two goal lead and they held this until the 75th minute. It was an own goal that put Soldiers back with a chance following a shot from Nathan Bedford that took a deflection off the luckless Compton defender and then with five minutes left Louis Purcell came up with the equaliser. The Longdog keeper Jake Barnes saved the second spot kick from Compton and then all five, taken by Sam Mosdell, Jake Pratchett, Terry Dingley, Sam Trodd and Max Trodd were converted.
Twentyten Reserves proved too strong for Southampton visitors Inmar and cruised through with a 7-3 win.
They took a three goals lead before Inmar replied and it was 4-1 at half time. Dan Hancock scored four, with singles from Adam Sawko, Jack Barrett and Jack Hulbert.
The two making their exit were Origin Headley and Basingstoke Colts. Origin were well beaten 6-0 by Coal Exchange at home. There only worthy effort in the game was shot by Bradley Hawkins hitting the bar.
Basingstoke Colts had a good first half against visitors Hythe Aztecs and were well worth their two goal lead by the 22nd minute. They led in the 17th minute when Benica Oprea netted after the keeper parried a cross from Connor Pullen. The Hythe keeper could not hold a a shot by Oprea and Caius Joseph was on hand to net. Luke Ratcliffe almost made it 3-0 with fine strike only to see it cleared off the line and soon after in the 35th minute the visitors had luck when a free kick hit Liam Self and resulted in an own goal and the visitors were back in the game. Four minutes into the second half it was 2-2, a misjudgement by Reese Emery and as Colts became hampered with injuries, Hythe scored twice in the final five minute
