FRYSTON AFC LIFTED THE PREMIERSHIP ONE LEAGUE CUP IN A DRAMATIC WIN OVER FOOTBALL PLAYING NOSTELL MINERS WELFARE WITH A GOAL IN THE OPENING MINUTE BY STEPHEN CAMPBELL AND AN INJURY TIME GOAL FROM SUBSTITUTE SPENCER BOND..
PREMIERSHIP ONE LEAGUE CUP FINAL - W&DSFL Sunday 16th April 2023.
Fryston AFC vs Nostell MW (3-1)
Goals from Stephen Campbell (2) and substitute Spencer Bond helped Fryston AFC lift the Premiership One League Cup following their tightly fought 3-1 success over Nostell Miners Welfare in a final full of drama.
Fryston took the lead in the 2nd minute when Lian Cooper broke away on the right-flank before forcing an excellent save form Nostell goalkeeper George Bason who tipped the ball over the bar at the expense of a corner. The resultant left-flank corner kick by Stephen Campbell evaded everyone and ended into the goal mouth to give Fryston an early 1-0 lead.
Jamie Rollinson almost doubled his sides lead when he headed narrowly wide from a Campbell free-kick. At the other end, Rollinson came to his sides rescue with a goal line clearance form a Dillon Connolly goal bound effort with only twelve minutes on the clock.
Three minutes later, Nostell almost equalised but saw Ben McAdam teasing cross headed narrowly over the bay by the energetic Lewis Hughes. Fryston looked dangerous on the counter-break and saw James Dyson rattle the foot of the post and his rebound saw James Lister miss an unguarded goal by drilling his rebound effort onto the crossbar.
Nostell retaliated and were denied two successive penalty appeals with fouls inside the Fryston box before doubling their lead in the 31st minute when a long punt forward by their goalkeeper Charlie Jones forced a poor headed clearance which fell in the path for Stephen Campbell who hit a powerful effort from over 20 yards on target to make it 2-0.
Fryston were forced to defend in numbers in the second half with Nostell dominating possession and creating gilt-edged chances. Substitute Gervas Chipasha sent in a goal bound 30 yards pile-driver which the full-length dive of goalkeeper Charlie Jones managed to push the ball onto the foot of the post to safety.
In the 65th minute, the elegant play of Josh Craig saw his perfectly weighted cross find Lewis Hughes who sent a point-blank header over the bar from close-range with only the goalkeeper at his mercy. Chance kept falling for Nostell with another golden opportunity wasted when substitute Kyle Makay cross saw Dillon Connoley steer his chance wide.
Another Nostell substitute Cory Woodward gave his side a lifeline with an excellent close-range goal to reduce the arrears to a single goal margin with ten minutes to go. Fryston were pinned in their own half for a sustained period with long clearances coming back time and time again.
However, in the third minute of injury time, a long clearance towards the centre touch line saw Nostell goalkeeper close in to sweel the clearance but was blocked by Fryston substitute Spence Bond who pounced on the loose ball and ran on before rolling the ball into the unguarded goal from 20 yards out to give his side a safety net and their first silverware of the season with the Premiership One League title their next target.
The match balls were sponsored by Lightwaves Leisuer & Community Centre.
Man of the match, sponsored by Pennines Trophies (Heckmondwike), went to Fryston AFC captain, Jamie Simpson.
