Capenhurst Villa press for promotion with a comfortable win

The battle at the top of Division 2 continues to intensify and the leadership changed hands once more with Capenhurst Villa again proudly heading the table following their 5–2 defeat of bottom club Mersey Royal. Cape led 3-0 at the break and although Royal pulled one back early in the 2nd period they had no answer to a visiting side in prime form at present. Simon Thelwell and Mike Banks added to their growing goals totals with a brace apiece for Cape who also had Rob McDowell registering as Paul Karisa and Lee Patterson hit replies for Royal. Richmond Raith Rovers lie in 2nd spot having garnered a vital 3-2 win at deposed leaders Manor Athletic who now drop to 4th place. Men on the mark for Rovers were Chris Evans, Alan Western and Ally Birmingham while Kirk Mustoe and Tom Carroll netted for the hosts. Helsby stayed in contention after overcoming Prescot Cables Reserves, 3-0. Carl Rendell was again a 2 goal man and he was joined on the score sheet by Ian Cox. Gateacre Village maintained their excellent recent form when, despite being reduced to 10 men for half the contest, they returned from Beb Athletic with a 2-1 win under their belts. The visitors took a 21st minute lead when John Whelan netted from close range and the game had entered it’s final quarter before Joe Griffiths levelled for Athletic following a smooth flowing attack. Parity was held for just 6 minutes, before Gateacre, who although reduced in numbers, were creating the greater number of chances, clinched the points when Curtis Owens hit the winner with a fiercely hit shot. Heswall Reserves claimed a useful away win as Tom Hartley grabbed the only goal of the game at struggling West Kirby Reserves and James Hooper and Michael Cummins were on target as Maghull Reserves defeated struggling Willaston [Anthony Clarkson], 2-1. Goals for Mossley Hill Athletic Reserves by Phil Davies and Phil Duncan were cancelled out by Ryan Clarke and Luke Streak of Ashville Reserves as the sides fought out a 2-2 draw and it was also honours even as Paul Leamy netted for Redgate Rovers and Dan Grace did likewise for visitors Marshalls.
Maghull enter the New Year as runaway leaders of Division 1 and strong favourites to become the 1st Liverpool based side to lift the title since Everton ‘C’ in 1955. On Saturday they were pushed all the way by lowly Mallaby before emerging as 4-2 victors. Steve Williams and Jay McGrane each grabbed a brace for Maghull while Gerard Mullen and Frank Clarke were the Mallaby marksmen. Hale remained in 2nd place when Carl Latham,2, Sean Wright, Michael Massey and Wayne Smith all obliged in a comprehensive 5-1 success at Southport Trinity who had Dan Hastings hitting the reply. Although having a man sent off with the score at 0-0, Newton went on to claim maximum reward as a result of Chris Sheppard hitting the games’ solitary goal in their home encounter with Mossley Hill Athletic. Cammell Laird Reserves took an early lead on their visit to 3rd placed South Liverpool before settling for a point from a 2-2 draw. Adam Lea and Danny Graham struck for Lairds with Gary Pollard finding the net twice for South. In the remaining fixture of a weather reduced Division 1 programme, Ashville ran out clear 3-0 winners over a Christleton side now just 1 place above the drop zone. Carl Murphy,2, and Perrie Black did the damage for the hosts.
There was also a number of postponements in Division 3 where leaders St Helens Town Reserves fell to their 2nd defeat of the campaign when being on the wrong end of an exciting odd goal in 7 contest at Bootle Reserves. Grant Pruden led the way for the hosts with a brace as Luke Anderson and Billy Smart added to the total while Andy and Alex Gilespie and Kyle Ross posted for Town. A 9-0 trouncing of Neston Nomads keeps Rainhill Town firmly in contention with Michael Fargher,2, Dan Leather, Dave Monteith, Matt Dooling, Mark Ellis, Kieran Gannon, Ashley Elliott and Jamie Keeley all contributing. A goal in each half by Terry Keenan underpinned 3rd placed Ford Motors’ 2-0 defeat of Hale Reserves and Dale Harris, Josh Carew, Jack Delgardo and John Cadwallader were on the mark for Chester Nomads Reserves as they got the better of South Liverpool Reserves [Paul Wilson, O.G.] by 4 goals to 2
In the only Youth Division fixture held, Tyler Ward’s double helped steer West Kirby to a 5-2 success over Maghull. Jack Ireland, Ryan Duffy and Tom Johnstone supplemented the victory as McCauley Lawrenson and Tom Baker registered for Maghull.

The Carlsberg West Cheshire League wishes you all a happy New Year.
