TWO GOAL HERO JORDAN PAYNE HELPED COLLEGE FC TO A 2-1 WIN OVER GLASSHOUHTON RANGERS TO LIFT THE CHAMPIONSHIP TWO LEAGUE CUP.
Wakefield & District Sunday Football League - Sunday 3rd April 2022.
Championship Two League Cup Final.
Two bright footballing sides produced an excellent brand of football to light up the opening final of the season as the first of the six silverware of the Wakefield & District Sunday Football League was fought gallantly.
College FC came from behind to edge this hard-fought Championship Two League Cup Final with a close 2-1 success over Glasshoughton Rangers FC at the Nostell MW complex in the first of the days double-header final.
Glasshoughton Rangers were the dominant outfit who were time & time again foiled by College FC's overworked keeper Neil Ingham whilst the latter were forced to contain and rely on counter-attacks to good effect. The Glasshoughton outfit took a deserved lead in the 15th minute when the lively Kyle Lacy latched on to a long ball before slotting the ball past the keeper in clinical fashion.
Glasshoughton dominated possession, not allowing the College side to get a foot hold into the match but a defensive mix-up saw livewire Jordan Payne pounce on the loose ball before applying a cool finish into the bottom corner for the equaliser.
On the half hour mark, College side's counter-attack again came to fruition and saw a flowing move down the right-flank finding Bubacar Sidibe whose cross was superbly controlled by Payne who nudged his side in to a 2-1 lead with a polished finish.
Glasshoughton were given a life line when a penalty was awarded but College in-form keeper Neil Ingham saved well to his right to keep his sides slender lead until the break.
The encounter was much tighter in the second half with both teams cagey and not committing forward but as time ran out, Glasshoughton pushed for the equaliser which left their rear guard exposed too often but College hung on for a well-deserved win for their first silverware in only their second season in the league.
Match ball for the final was sponsored by Lightwaves Leisure & Community Centre. The man of the match award, sponsored by Pennine Trophies (Heckmondwike) went to two goal hero of the game Jordan Payne of College FC.
