MATCH ROUND UP WEEK ENDING 9 October 2010

West Kirby took full advantage of a free weekend for the morning’s leaders, Maghull by taking all three points against Ellesmere Port in a pulsating tussle at Marine Park. However the Deesiders were made to work all the way to the final whistle before overcoming the plucky Port side by three goals to two. Ellesmere Port took an early lead on 15 minutes when Jay McGarry slotted home following a superbly worked move. The visitors lead was only to last seven minutes when Kris Hesketh bagged an equaliser. All set for an easy home, or so it seemed. However, Port had other ideas and took the lead for a second time midway through the second half thanks to Matty Forshaw. Unfortunately for the visitors disaster struck twice as two goalkeeping errors let in Dave Forbes and then Chay Dysart to snatch the points and top spot in Division One. Southport Trinity also took advantage of the fixtures to close the gap on Maghull and leapfrog over Helsby into third place. Matty McKeowan and Ian Morrison sealed the points against Willaston rendering Domonic Holden’s score as purely a consolation strike. Helsby travelled back to Cheshire shell-shocked following a 4-0 thumping at the hands of Marine Reserves. The Arriva Stadium faithful were left to celebrate goals from Tom Amos, Antony Shinks and a couple from Mike Brown. Heswall’s hopes took a downward turn following a 0-2 home loss to the ever improving Vauxhall Motors Reserves. Alan Shumaker’s team took all three points thanks to goals from Phil Coffin and Tony Ashton. This allowed Marshalls to close in on the Gayton Park outfit as they secured a very impressive win at Christleton by four goals to nil. Mark Dermott, Richard Jones and a brace from Dave Powell did the damage for Marshalls who are thoroughly enjoying their first taste of Division One football so far. Christleton are left looking over their shoulders, fourth from bottom.

Certainly if it is goals you want to see you can do a whole lot worse than check out your local West Cheshire side. The five Division Two games brought in no less than twenty-four goals between them. Chester Nomads were held to a surprising 2-2 home draw to struggling Hale. Goals for Nomads Ryan Butcher and Jack Delgado were cancelled out by Hale’s Paul Hart and Andy Morgan. However the point was enough to take Nomads one point clear of Ashville at the top of the League, as Ashville were on cup duty. AFC Bebington Athletic just edged out Heswall Reserves in a seven goal thriller at the Unilever Sports Ground. A Sean Heggarty brace, a goal from Jonathon Oliver and an own goal were enough to beat a brace for Heswall’s Andy Corless and a single for Andy Brown. Maghull kept their place in the chasing pack as they added to Mallaby’s recent poor defensive record, running out 4-2 winners. Mike Keegan, two from Paul Grant and Steve McNicholas ensured that Mallaby left Maghull empty handed despite goals for Mike New and Steve Abbott. Richmond Raith Rovers secured an impressive 2-1 victory over West Kirby Reserves at Childwall with John Garner and Tom Halligan cancelling out Robbie Stewart’s effort for the visitors. In what had all the hallmarks of a relegation six-pointer, even at this early stage of the season, Bronze Social recorded only their second point of the campaign when they drew 2-2 at home to fellow strugglers, Prescot Cables Reserves. Cables would have hoped that two away goals from Steve Tames and Kurt Sherlock would have been enough to claim a win but Bronze Social’s Dave Huntington and Lee Dermody had other ideas.

Ellesmere Port Juniors are having a mixed season and find themselves in mid-table following an entertaining 0-0 home draw with Liverpool side, Millennium. Good, attractive football and plenty of chance failed to find a goal for either side. Pride of place in the Youth Division however goes to Runcorn Town Youth who thrashed Neston Nomads by eight goals to one. Gareth Hewitt claimed a hat trick which was added to by Lewis Steen, Lee Turkington, Alan Edwards, Robbie Shearer and Jordan Dwyer. Neston’s Danny Preece replied for the visitors.
