The full Carlsberg West Cheshire league programme was wiped out on Saturday and it is hoped that conditions improve for the clutch of fixtures scheduled for the forthcoming week. On Wednesday [21st December] 4 fixtures are set to take place with league leaders Maghull visiting Cammell Laird Reserves. After a poor start Lairds have shown improved form and will prove to be a stiff test as the North Liverpool side bid to win their 1st title since joining the league. Many eyes will be on the Ashville v West Kirby clash. As league champions Kirby have had to rebuild their team this time round and although, as to be expected, form has been inconsistent they got the better of Ashville in last month’s Cheshire Amateur Cup tie. For their part 2nd placed Ashville are bidding to achieve the rare feat of becoming champions of Division 1 and Division 2 in successive seasons. Also on Wednesday the young Vauxhall Reserves outfit will be hoping to make home advantage count when attempting to avenge October’s 2-0 defeat at the hands of opponents Christleton. Christleton are one of 4 clubs propping up the table on 13 points and any reward at Rivacre Road would be a welcome advance Christmas present. Another youthful outfit Marine Reserves will be aiming to end a run of 3 successive defeats when they entertain fellow Liverpool side Mossley Hill Athletic who enter the fixture on the back of successive 4-1 league victories. When the pair met in September Athletic ran out victors by 4 goals to nil and will be keen to complete the double as they continue to establish themselves in Division 1.
All 3 Division 1 games scheduled for Christmas Eve feature teams at the wrong end of the table. Basement boys Willaston visit Ellesmere Port [kick off 12 noon] having overcame the same opposition on their own ground just last month. Port have struggled recently after making an excellent start to the season and will be looking for maximum reward to get their campaign back on course. Blacon YC are also in that quartet of teams on 13 points having played the most games of the foursome and a lengthy losing run has seen them slip down the league. Saturday’s opponents are local rivals Chester Nomads [2.00 p.m.] who in their 1st season in the top sphere lie in a very respectable sixth place. Upton AA have a single point advantage over the teams below them and entertain 5th placed Marshalls [12 noon] who have won just once on their travels.
The two scheduled Division 2 games [2 o’clock] feature the top 3 teams in the table. Leaders Bebington Athletic visit Capenhurst Villa who although in the lower reaches of mid table have played the fewest number of games in the Division and have suffered only 2 defeats. The remaining fixture should be a close affair and sees 2nd placed Hale, who have 4 games in hand over Bebington, play host to an Ashville Reserves side who are 2 points inferior than their opponents having played a game more.
