As winter approaches and the early nights draw in, there were only two midweek fixtures in the West Cheshire League, both under floodlights and both in Division One. It would not be a small
understatement to say that Ashville has something of a troubled close season losing management teams and players alike. However the club seems to have regrouped and there is much promise in
the new regime. This was further evidenced as they convincingly beat Vauxhall Motors Reserves by three goals to one. Goals from Lee Bridge, Jay Clare and Leon Jones were met with a single reply from Mark Bainbridge. Chester Nomads started the season like a runaway train but recent results
have been far from encouraging. So they will have taken great delight in netting back on the winning track at Southport Trinity, taking the hosts apart one-four. Andy Vernon’s solitary effort was merely a consolation as Nomads Dale Harris, Dan Lloyd, Dan Farrell and Kieran Smith made certain of three fine away points.
So to Saturday and Heswall remain proudly positioned in top spot in Division One as they edged past a competitive Mossley Hill Athletic side by the only goal of the game thanks to the efforts of Matty Johnson. Mossley will be disappointed with their early season form and to drop more home points.
Close on the tails of Heswall are the free scoring Cammell Lairds Reserves who, having won nil-three at Chester Nomads, now have scored 39 goals in just nine league games, an average better than four goals a game. Craig Cairns claimed two of the goals with the other coming from Ryan Jones. Newton
nipped into fourth place in the league thanks to a two-one win at home to Chester side, Upton AA.
Jamie Hannah and Dave Thompson ensured that the spoils went to Newton, whilst Upton will be disappointed to have only registered one score from Simon Andrews. Newton’s elevation was thanks, in no small part, to Ashville’s dropping of two home points, drawing two-two with Christleton. It will have not helped that an own goal aided Christleton point. Scoring in the correct net for Ashville were Jay Clare and the ever merging Joe Brazzell. Chris McGann claimed the visitors
second. Unless their fortune changes soon, Ellesmere Port will be declaring their season a disaster zone. They took a nil-six hammering at home to West Kirby (Mick McGraa (2), Terry Cotgrave (2),Kevin Fitzsimmons and Lee Davies).
In Division Two, Heswall Reserves took advantage of South Liverpool’s Liverpool Challenge Cup
adventures to join them at the top of the league, separated only by an inferior goal difference. Mind you, leagues have been won on goal difference! The Gayton Park outfit made it a thoroughly miserable weekend for Mossley Hill, defeating their Reserves by two goals to one. Owen Davies and
Paul Lindfield were the home heroes, with Brendan Agnew claiming the single reply. Mallaby will begin to think that this could be their season as they defeated ‘derby’ rivals AFC Bebington Athletic on their ‘own patch’, 2-3, and moved into third place. Bebington would have hoped that strikes from Sean Heggarty and Tom Byrne would have been enough to secure three points. Mallaby’s John Hedges, Gerrard Mullen and John Coulter thought otherwise. Ashville’s Reserves enjoyed a nil-three
win at Willaston thanks to efforts from Kay Williams (2) and Kyle Burch. Helsby visited Manor Athletic and took their hosts apart, winning two-eight. The games honours went to hat-trick hero,
Steve O’Brien, whilst both John Coady and Ian Cox claimed two apiece. The Helsby scoring was completed by Wes Huizer. It is unlikely that the home scorers, Andy Kingham and Tom Mole, will
have taken much joy from their efforts. Richmond Raith Rovers claimed a fine win at West Kirby Reserves, two-four. Home scorers, James Atherton and Adam Halton saw their efforts wiped out by
a Rob Madine hat-trick and a single from Aaron Gouthwaite. Capenhurst Villa and Maghull Reserves fought out a dour one-one draw with Villa’s Iain Forster seeing his score cancelled out by Maghull’s Chris Nation.
