CARLSBERG WEST CHESHIRE AFL
MATCH ROUNDUP W/E 22nd JANUARY 2011

The only remaining unbeaten League record was shattered on Saturday when Division 2 leaders Chester Nomads went down 5-3 at New Brighton. The 3rd placed host side had Jay Clare, Paul Howell, Neil Ashurst, James Quinn and Tom Carroll on target with Denzil Harris accounting for Nomad’s total. Ashville moved to within a point of the leaders but with a game in hand as a Timmy Bigland double was added to by Ross Rule in the 3-1 defeat of Capenhurst Villa who had Steve Morgan replying. Mossley Hill Athletic remain 4th after edging out table trailers Bronze Social 2-1 thanks to a Simon Ellison brace as Gary Baker netted for Bronze. An Arran Baird hat trick spearheaded Mallaby’s 1st win since early September. John Skipsy also obliged in the 4-2 success which saw John Power and Jack Boardman register for opponents Maghull Reserves. A Ryan Cullen double spurred Hale to a welcome 2-1 victory over West Kirby Reserves [Ian Hobday] while Heswall Reserves [Andy Brown, Gordon Harrison, pen., Robert Oates] upset the Richmond Raith Rovers [Ryan Miller, Sam Halligan] applecart thanks to their 3-2 away day triumph.
There was a 100% success rate for Division 1’s top 2 with leaders Maghull being indebted to Matty Poulson, Tom Poley, Ben Sumner and Brad Smart as they overcame Upton AA [Simon Andrews] 4-1 and a late solitary Terry Cotgrave effort was just enough for West Kirby to see off visiting Willaston. Adam Hunter, 2, and Willis Buckley were the men on the mark for Helsby in their 3-0 defeat of Christleton while Heswall have hit a rich vein of form and after David Swaine had plundered the game’s only goal at Cammell Laird Reserves on Wednesday it was the turn of Jamie Kenyon and Adrian Moody to find the net in Saturday’s 2-1 defeat of Southport Trinity [Phil Frankland]. Matty Davies took the plaudits for Marine Reserves when his hat trick steered them to a 5-1 win over Blacon YC [Geoff Abraham] while Marshalls [Lee Walsh, Jay Nilson] shared 4 goals with Cammell Lairds Reserves [Lee Furlock, Andy Olsen].
There was a shock in store for Division 3 leaders Manor Athletic who found themselves a goal down at half time to an Ian Lewis strike for Marshalls Reserves who then went on to resolutely and successfully defend their lead after the break. Top marksman of the day was Matty Tonge who plundered 4 goals as Merseyside Police ran out 6-1 winners over Hale Reserves while Dean Thomas was a 2 goal man in Mersey Royal’s 4-2 defeat of Bebington Athletic Reserves. Christleton Reserves eased themselves out of the bottom 3 when Josh Wonderley and a Ryan Abraham penalty earned them maximum reward against Ellesmere Port Reserves who replied through Andy Walker.
Halewood Town eased into the semi finals of the Liverpool Youth Cup courtesy of an impressive 4-1 defeat of Mags with Tom James, Tom Stewart, Davy Worsley and Sam Sullivan all finding the net. Maghull [Kieran Brisien, Thomas Jump, Mike Cummins] keep top spot in the Youth Division following an odd goal in 5 victory over Millennium [Thom Leatherbarrow] while 2nd placed Belfry also had to rely on a single goal success as Danny Hart and Sam Ennis obliged as they edged out Widnes Town [Kevin Dunning]. Matty Roberts starred for Neston Nomads as they collected their 4th point of the campaign. His treble was matched by a Jordan Dwyer double and a Gareth Hewitt strike for visitors Runcorn Town. Marshalls also had a hat trick hero in Jamie McDonald as they got the better of Ellesmere Port by a 4-1 margin.
